It was a dark and difficult time to watch our child grow while behaving in ways we did not understand. We had so many questions, but above all we kept asking ourselves: “Why is this happening to our child?” He started school, but we were told he could not remain there because he did not speak or play with the other children. In nursery school, children were expected to sing and repeat the lessons.
A family friend then recommended Madame Rosine, who worked in Gisozi. He told us: “She will assess your child and explain what you should do.” We did not hesitate to place our child in her care, and from that day our lives began to change for the better.
We were impressed by Madame Rosine’s professionalism and the care she brought to the assessment. She took time to observe our child, listen to our concerns as parents and explain every step in clear and thorough terms.
She advised us to entrust our child to Autisme Rwanda for ongoing support and told us that we would soon begin to see positive changes. What struck us most was the truly individual attention he received. He was not simply placed in a group and expected to follow a standard programme. The support moved at his pace, responded to his needs and used his day-to-day progress to determine each next step.
We also valued the fact that we shared the same view about not rushing to use medication to calm him or help him sleep. Autisme Rwanda focused on teaching him and helping him adapt his behaviour across different situations. This approach produced very encouraging results.
Day after day, our son continued to progress. He began to speak, learned to adapt his behaviour in different situations, started asking for food himself and slept more peacefully. These changes gave us real hope. His progress was so significant that he was soon able to join a mainstream school, where he has continued to do very well.
Thanks to Madame Rosine’s expertise and professionalism, and to the work of the educators at Autisme Rwanda, our child received what he needed for both his present and future development.
